Westworld Costar Promises Season 1 Finale Isn’t a ‘Cliffhanger’
With HBO’s hit series, Game of Thrones, nearing its end, the network was certainly hoping to deliver another franchise hit before its conclusion. And boy did they succeed. The sci-fi western, Westworld, just aired its seventh episode, and fans all over are hooked and ready for more – and HBO has acquiesced in the form of a season 2 renewal. The series is based off of the 1973 film of the same name, and takes place in the futuristic theme park, Westworld, which is the brain child of Anthony Hopkin’s Dr. Ford.
The series has been lauded for its exploration of the human condition, outstanding cast, and plot, which lends itself very nicely to fan theories and speculation. With three episodes remaining in Westworld‘s first season, fans of the show are no doubt hoping that some (if not most) of their questions are answered. While all too often these types of series end on cliffhangers, which serve the purpose of hooking the audience into future seasons, it looks like viewers do not have to worry about that with Westworld.
Jimmi Simpson, who stars as the ever-evolving William, recently spoke with TV Line, and indicated that an annoying cliffhanger is not in the works. In response to an inquiry regarding any information that can be disclosed about the season 1 finale, Simpson responded:
“Let’s see. Well, I would say I was on the edge of my seat all the way until I got the 10 script… I think we all had different ideas, and then when 10 came — I think I could speak for most of the cast — the general feeling was like, ‘Holy f—king s—t.’ Because basically, what they’ve done is they’ve somehow tied up everything you wanted to know and then pointed this whole world of other s–t that you hadn’t really thought of that now you really, really want to know, too. It’s not some bulls–t cliffhanger where you’re like, ‘Oh f–k, what now?’ It’s like, ‘Oh my God, thank you, and I can’t wait for more.'”
With viewers constantly spinning their wheels over things such as the multiple timeline theory, the Man in Black’s (Ed Harris) identity, and the fate of Arnold, it is nice to hear that season 1 will not leave us with too many unanswered questions. Of course, the previously aforementioned theories may all prove to be incorrect, but it does appear like we may know for sure after the season finale.
While cliffhangers are pretty effective in generating excitement and speculation for a series’ subsequent season while on hiatus, they can also be unbearable when the show’s break is longer than just a few months. While Westworld was renewed for a second season, the reports indicate that viewers may have to wait until 2018 for it to happen. That would have indeed been a long time to sit on “some bulls–t cliffhanger” from a series that is good enough as it is to blow your mind.
Westworld continues next Sunday with ‘Trace Decay’ @9pm on HBO.
