Gotham Releases ‘Grindhouse’ Trailer for The Sirens

[SPOILERS for those not caught up on Gotham ahead.]

The name “Sirens” has an important association for the Batman mythos, as Gotham City Sirens was the name of a popular comic book series (built around well-known female members of the series’ supporting cast) that was created by Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Paul Dini and inspired by his fan-favorite “Gotham Girls” Flash-animation series. “Sirens” is also the name of the nightclub run by the female antihero team of Barbara Kean (Erin Richards) and Tabitha Galavan (Jessica Lucas) on FOX’s Batman prequel series, Gotham.

A newly-released Gotham season 3 trailer focuses on the past and upcoming adventures of “Babs & Tabs”, in the style of a trailer for a “Grindhouse” film. “Grindhouse” refers to the pop-cultural nickname for the low-rent independent movie theaters of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s – where the types of schlocky low-budget features that inspired Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse project (the films Planet Terror and Death Proof) generally played.

The term “Grindhouse” is nowadays used as a shorthand description for films (like Hobo with a Gun) that ape Tarantino and Rodriguez’s retro-reminiscent stylistic flourishes (i.e. damaged film stock, choppy edits, exaggerated sound-effects and lurid narration). That’s the case with this new trailer for Gotham’s still-unfolding season 3, bringing audiences up to speed on the romantic/criminal relationship between Barbara and Tabitha on the show.

While the “Grindhouse” trailer aesthetic is far removed from Gotham’s typical mood and tone, the lurid goings-on of “Babs and Tabs'” respective (and joint) storylines over the years provide more than enough of the sexed-up violence expected of the real thing. The main thrust of the trailer, however, sets up the basis for the pair’s storyline as it moves more to the forefront in the next few episodes of Gotham. Barbara, incited by Jessica’s kidnapping at the hands of Edward Nygma, undertakes a violent quest to track Jessica down and rescue her by any means necessary – before the Riddler-to-be exacts vengeance for a transgression he has been manipulated into believing the pair committed.

Currently making its way through its third season, Gotham’s characters have found themselves in the midst of a running storyline the series has tagged “Mad City”. Loyalties between the myriad political and criminal factions on the show are currently being upended by a new series of double-crosses and an impending resurgence for the Court of Owls.

Gotham continues next Monday with ‘Time Bomb’ at 8pm on FOX.
