New Star Wars: Rogue One IMAX Poster & ‘Call Sign’ TV Spot

With just over a month until it hits theaters (which, yes, means that it’s been almost a year since Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released), the marketing campaign for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is really kicking into gear. For the longest time the spin-off, which dramatises the original movie’s opening crawl, was as closely a guarded secret as the Death Star plans the characters will be stealing (with even that brief synopsis the subject of rumour), but now Lucasfilm are happily giving us more and more.

A new TV spot for Rogue One, titled “Call Sign”, has now arrived and it’s essentially a trimmed-down version of previously-released Rogue One TV spots, with the focus on the ensemble cast uniting. That’s Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) casually telling everyone they “might want to strap in” in this Rogue One TV spot, with K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) making a sardonic quip after hurling stormtroopers about, and protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) welcoming the gang to the Rebellion.

The name of the TV spot, “Call Sign”, is particularly interesting as it serves as reaffirmation of what the movie’s title actually means. After a lot of secrecy, Lucasfilm is now finally being open about Rogue One indeed being the call sign of the ship used by the team of scoundrels assembled by Jyn to steal the Death Star plans.

As there’s no new footage there’s not really scope for fresh speculation beyond that, although it’s worth saying that the shot of the shuttle taking off from Yavin IV with the gas giant in the background not only looks cool, but hints at the extent of the undercover element of the mission – based on footage from the other trailers, that’s an Imperial shuttle the Rebels have stolen.

And on that note – Lucasfilm has also released a new Rogue One IMAX poster, which you can check out below:

The poster naturally highlights Rogue One‘s IMAX release and, as is typical for IMAX posters, has a minimalist design. The core cast of the film appear in their now-familiar poster formation, this time flanked by X-Wings and U-Wings tearing through a white inverse of the Death Star’s outer shell.

What’s particularly noteworthy about this poster is the inclusion of Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), who’s been pretty much absent from the Rogue One print campaign thus far. He take the place here of the villainous Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), which makes sense if the poster’s meant to be focusing on the film’s good guys. The IMAX poster for The Force Awakens was an iconic standout of that movie’s marketing, and it’s fair to say this one continues the trend.
