The Flash: Jay Garrick Returns In ‘The Present’ Synopsis

[SPOILERS for those not caught up on The Flash ahead.]

Ever since its 2014 debut, The Flash has been a major success story for The CW and the DC television universe. Spinning off from the Arrow series and being a part of a mega-franchise which then saw new series born in both DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl, it’s now one of the network’s leading shows and continues to impress both fans and critics alike with its inventive and unpredictable storylines. Having introduced the God of Speed, Savitar in a recent episode, more details about the future of The Flash season 3 are now beginning to trickle out.

Following on from the news that actor Greg Grunberg has been cast in a recurring role this season comes the synopsis for The Flash‘s December 6 episode, ‘The Present’, revealing that John Wesley Shipp will be guest-starring and reprising his role as Jay Garrick.

The synopsis for the episode (from The CW) reads as follows:

BARRY SEEKS HELP FROM JAY GARRICK — With Alchemy and Savitar still looming threats, Barry (Grant Gustin) is unable to focus on the Christmas holiday, and especially his relationship with Iris (Candice Patton). Determined to stop Savitar, Barry goes to Earth-3 to get advice from Jay Garrick (guest star John Wesley Shipp). Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) wants to help Barry fight Savitar and reveals that he’s been training with H.R. (Tom Cavanagh), which doesn’t go over well with Barry. As Cisco (Carlos Valdes) faces his first Christmas without his brother Dante (guest star Nicholas Gonzalez), old wounds are reopened.

With the confirmation of Garrick’s return, fans could be set to see a huge and chaotic episode just in time for Christmas. Set photos have also indicated that Mark Hamill could be starring in ‘The Present’ as The Trickster, with clues that have come out since suggest he may be on Earth-3, causing trouble for John Wesley Shipp’s version of the Scarlet Speedster. With Barry on the way to Earth-3 to seek Jay’s advice, there’s sure to be a big reunion (of sorts) on the cards.

Of course, with so many returning faces, Jay’s comeback may be drowned out by all of the action going on around him. The Trickster is a huge character who’s sure to take up a lot of screen time during the festive episode, so the show writers will have to do a good job to ensure a balanced offering.

That being said, fans will likely just be happy to see Jay back on the small screen, even if it’s just for this single episode. In bringing him back, the show is opening up a number of doors and avenues which may be explored further down the line. Having such a wealth of material to draw on, the series looks set to continue gaining momentum and delivering the superhero TV series that fans want.

The Flash season 3 continues next Tuesday on The CW with ‘Killer Frost’ at 8pm.
