The Flash Movie Starts Production ‘This Year’ Says Ezra Miller


Although initially launched in the Zack Snyder 2013 Superman vehicle, Man of Steel, Warner Bros’ DC Extended Universe really kicked off earlier this year with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. The second film in the shared universe introduced a bevy of new DC Comics heroes, giving large roles to Bruce Wayne aka Batman (Ben Affleck) and Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), while other characters received cameo introductions. Barry Allen aka The Flash (Ezra Miller) made his first appearance in Batman V Superman, appeared again in David Ayer’s villain team-up Suicide Squad, and will return for Snyder’s Justice League that debuts next year.

However, Barry Allen’s solo venture, The Flash, is seemingly without a release date and without a director since Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa recently parted ways with the project. The Flash movie was a part of the DCEU slate when it was first announced, with Miller’s casting revealed along with the film aiming for a March 2018 release, but it remains to be seen when it will be released and who will eventually sit in the director’s chair. Now, Miller offers some hint as to the timeline of when the film will head into production.

During a roundtable interview promoting his next release, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miller spoke about the progress of The Flash movie and when fans can expect the film to gear up for production. He said:

“We don’t know right now [who the director will be], but I think we’ll start this year, I think it’s coming up pretty quick.”

When it was announced that the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander had been slated for release on March 16, 2018 — with Warner Bros taking care of distribution on the video game film — it seemingly indicated The Flash would be bumped from that date. However, Warner Bros has not announced any change in release date for The Flash, and if the film does enter production soon, they could be sticking with an early 2018 date — though it remains to be seen if it will be March 16 or another day.

Certainly, Miller’s comments seem to indicate Warner Bros is keeping The Flash on track for that 2018 release date, especially since it was previously reported the project would begin filming in January 2017 — although, that was prior to Famuyiwa’s exit. Earlier this fall, Famuyiwa announced a script draft for The Flash was finished and with key roles like Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) and Henry Allen (Billy Crudup) already cast, the film could be ready to go once a new director is named.

That said, who the new director will be and when The Flash movie will actually enter production remains to be seen. But, Miller’s comment about starting soon should give fans some assurance that Warner Bros has made The Flash movie a priority in the burgeoning DCEU.
