Don’t Breathe Director Confirmed to Helm Girl in the Spider’s Web


Back in 2011, director David Fincher (Gone Girl) made the American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, based on the novel of the same name written and posthumously published by Stieg Larsson in 2005. Despite the fact that the original trilogy of Swedish thrillers had already been adapted before in Larsson’s native country in 2009, Fincher’s version for Western audiences proved a minor success that rode on the wave of the first novel’s popularity stateside.

In the past, co-star Rooney Mara has made it clear that she would be more than willing to take on the lead role of hacker extraordinaire Lisbeth Salander once more, even as the hopes of a sequel to Fincher’s first film in the series have continued to dwindle. In fact, the latest word has production on The Girl in the Spider’s Web –– the fourth novel in the Millenium series, as well as the first installment not written by original author Stieg Larsson — already underway with an entirely new cast and crew coming coming together. On that note, a director has officially been tapped to make what is being called a sequel to Fincher’s feature from 2011.

According to ComingSoon.net, Don’t Breathe director Fede Álvarez has been signed by Sony Pictures to helm The Girl in the Spider’s Web alongside frequent collaborater and co-writer Rodo Sayagues based on the original novel by David Lagercrantz. With a follow-up to Don’t Breathe still in the offing, Álvarez and Sayagues are determined to devote their time and attention to the sequel to Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo first and foremost.

Whether or not fans of Fincher’s first film, Larsson’s original trilogy, or viewers of the Swedish trilogy of feature films will be eager to see The Girl in the Spider’s Web with another cast and crew attached remains to be seen. That being said, Álvaraez has thus far proven himself to be a top-notch director of tension-fueled thrillers, which bodes well for the movie overall.

Álvarez is a more than suitable candidate to take the helm of a property drenched in psycho-sexual themes, dealing explicitly with misogny and violence. Therfore, here’s hoping for the very best from Álvarez, Sayagues, and the rest of the cast and crew from Sony Pictures’ effort that will be The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
