Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Begins Reshoots

Throughout the life of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been plenty movies deemed to be “risks”. One of the biggest was Guardians of the Galaxy, thanks to it being largely set outside the rest of the universe’s stories and featuring a talking tree and a gun-toting raccoon as two of the main characters. Little did anyone know that it would turn out to be a gigantic hit, which has led to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 being one of the most anticipated movies on Marvel’s Phase 3.

The sequel is the next film set to be released within the MCU. The entire cast has returned for the second adventure and will welcome newcomers Kurt Russell, Elizabeth Debicki, and Pom Klementieff. Karen Gillan’s Nebula is one of the returning characters, but this time she will be joining the team instead of fighting against them. While fans are still anxiously awaiting the first full trailer, Gillan has revealed her job on the film isn’t quite done yet.

Gillan recently remarked on Twitter that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is heading back for reshoots, starting today. Gillan’s comments are vague, as they don’t offer any indication as to the extent of the reshoots or which cast members will be joining her. However, it is certainly possible that Marvel, Disney, or James Gunn will offer up some details and provide clarification in the days ahead.

The word “reshoots” has become a troubling word to have associated with larger films. There are plenty of conflicting reports on how reshoots changed Suicide Squad, or the various rumors swirling around Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and its reshoots. In the case of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, however, the reshoots are likely nothing to worry about, making it a situation similar to the recently announced reshoots DC Comics’ Wonder Woman is undergoing.

Marvel (and many other larger studios) schedule in dates for reshoots before filming even begins. As such, it’s likely not a cause for concern but rather an opportunity for the filmmakers to further improve upon their projects. James Gunn has already undertaken the task of editing the sequel and most likely has found a few things that he thinks could be added or changed for the better. If this is the case, then it is exactly why studios schedule dates for reshoot in advance. Besides, the film is over five months away from hitting theaters, which gives Gunn and co. plenty of time to incorporate the new material, and get the film exactly as they want it.
