Jeremy Renner Promises ‘Exciting Stuff’ in Avengers: Infinity War

The Marvel Cinematic Universe just received another new addition to its growing canon with Doctor Strange, and even with four more movies standing between audiences and Avengers: Infinity War, excitement for the culmination of this universe continues to grow with each installment. Following the events of his solo outing, Strange is left in the position to potentially play a large role in the MCU moving forward and will get the chance to interact with many of the other familiar faces of the universe in his next few appearances. While most fans are anxious to see him and his fellow facial hair bro Tony Stark appear together, the door is open for all characters, Hawkeye included.

Jeremy Renner will once again be back as the sharpshooting archer, which could once again leave him wondering how a guy with a bow and arrow is supposed to match up with Thanos. While the answer to this question remains to be seen, he is teasing exciting things are in the works for Infinity War, especially for Hawkeye.

He was recently interviewed by HeyUGuys to promote his upcoming role in the potential Oscar contending sci-fi film Arrival but was asked about, presumably, the next time he will be playing the character. For obvious reasons, Renner would not and could not say specifically what is in store for Clint Barton, but is teasing “exciting stuff” is in store.

If I knew anything, I still couldn’t tell you. But I don’t know anything. I know there’s Infinity Wars, I know Avengers 3 and 4 are happening. But I don’t know outside of my involvement or anything else. I can’t tell you! What if I’m dead in the first one? I don’t know. I might already be dead. … I know the talks [about] what it’s about sounded fantastic. The Russo brothers have got some really great ideas and they’re following certain parts of Infinity Wars. There’s some really exciting stuff for a lot of the characters, especially with… what they’re thinking about doing with Hawkeye especially, I’m pretty excited about.

Renner’s enthusiasm is hopefully genuine and not just praise for his next film, as Hawkeye has so far not been given the most important roles in previous MCU films. That said, he remains a founding member of the Avengers and a recurring hero in the universe, no matter how many times he retires. Hawkeye’s current whereabouts are unknown, but with Cap and Bucky making the journey to Wakanda at the end of Captain America: Civil War, the rest of Cap’s secret team could be there as well. If that is the case, the highly technologically advanced country may be able to figure out some new tricks to give Hawkeye that will help him out in his next battle.

Hawkeye is unlikely to be a leading man in either Avengers: Infinity War or the followup, Untitled Avengers, but he should still get his moments to shine. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely showed in Civil War they can construct a film that gives each character a purpose and a memorable moment, so the idea that they are getting more characters is certainly exciting. How they weave together all these characters will continue to be closely held to Marvel’s proverbial chest, but Renner’s comments are sure to only further raise expectations for not only Hawkeye, but every other character in Avengers: Infinity War.
