Homecoming Won’t Be The Lowest Grossing Spider-Man Film For Long

Spider-Man: Homecoming will officially pass the worldwide box office titles of one of its predecessors, but still won’t be the highest-grossing Spider-Man solo film to date. Following on his brief but memorable introduction in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming is the first solo film outing for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

The first solo Spidey film set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Homecoming stood out from character’s previous films thanks not only to the existence of the Avengers in the narrative, but also its focus on Peter Parker at a much younger age than audiences have got to see previously. However, despite Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s overwhelmingly positive critical reception, the film has brought in low-end box office totals up until this point. And notably, Homecoming has yet to pass the worldwide box office totals of any of the previous five live-action Spider-Man films.

However, it looks like that’s finally about to change. BoxOfficeMojo is reporting that Spider-Man: Homecoming has officially passed $700 million at the worldwide box office this weekend, with a total of just over $702 million at this point. This news comes following the film’s theatrical release in Japan this past Friday, where it’s earned $7.1 million so far. This was just slightly higher than what the film earned domestically this weekend, raking in an additional $6.1 million in the States, pushing its domestic total to a little over $306 million.

With this new milestone, it’s fair to say that Spider-Man: Homecoming will at least pass the worldwide box office total of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which earned close to $709 million for itself back in 2014. However, the film looks unlikely to pass the worldwide totals of any of the other live-action Spider-Man films, including Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man ($821 million), Spider-Man 2 ($783 million), and Spider-Man 3 ($890 million), or director Marc Webb’s 2012 reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man ($757 million).

Now, on a production budget of $175 million, a worldwide total of just over $700 million still makes Spider-Man: Homecoming an all-around success for Marvel and Sony. But, at the same time, this could be indicative of a possibly increasing lack of interest in the Spider-Man property amongst general movie going audiences, especially since Spider-Man: Homecoming ranks as one of the most well-reviewed of any of the films to date. And considering that Marvel has already started work on a sequel to Homecoming – which will hit theaters in 2019 after Avengers 4 – and Sony is currently developing multiple stand-alone Spider-Man spinoff films, it’ll be interesting to see if any of them are able to break the property’s recent box office downturn over the next few years.
