Gotham Season 4: First Look at Crystal Reed as Sofia Falcone
Gotham season 4 will bring a dangerous new character into Gordon’s orbit, while also moving him towards his destiny as the city’s police commissioner. Gotham has always been about the evolution of the titular city and its cast of heroes and villains. Mostly, the series has focused on the various rogues gallery that Batman will one day inherit. Season 4, naturally, will continue this course. We will see Butch and Selina slowly become Solomon Grundy and Catwoman, respectively. Jonathan Crane will be back as Scarecrow (and more fearsome than before), while new characters like Professor Pyg will also cause trouble for the GCPD.
Along with all the nefarious players, however, Gotham season 4 will also see the rise of new heroes. Bruce will move closer to his identity as Batman, as has been teased in marketing for the new season. Though he’s trained and investigated before, the season 3 finale proved that Bruce is now ready to take to the streets and enact his own brand of justice. Meanwhile, Gordon will continue to battle with his considerable demons, as he tries to define what type of person he is.
EW has our first look at one of the new characters that will test Gordon in Gotham season 4. At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that Crystal Reed (Teen Wolf) would be coming to the show to play Sofia Falcone. The daughter of crime boss Carmine Falcone, Sofia has long been running one of her family’s operations in the south of Gotham City. Now, she will be stepping into the big leagues, in season 4.
With Sofia’s arrival, Gordon will be given a new love interest. He will also once again enter into a shady alliance with the criminal underworld. As part of that journey, Gordon will reach his lowest point yet. All the moral darkness, however, may be part of an effort to move Gordon closer to his destiny, according to Gotham executive producer John Stephens:
“We’re going to see Jim make, in some ways, big steps toward I guess what you would call the commissionership. But also we’re going to see Jim, in his quest to save the city, cross different ethical lines than he ever did before. It’s going to bring him to an ethical nadir that we haven’t seen him at, and it’s going to be told through the context of a relationship that he has with Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Don Falcone, who’s played by Crystal Reed this year. And that’s going to be a really compelling and interesting relationship.”
One of the biggest issues fans and critics have had when it comes to Gotham is the approach to Gordon. Not only can his narrative be repetitive and uninteresting to watch at times, but his whole character is almost the polar opposite of the source material. While the promise of more ethical shortcuts isn’t inspiring, the idea that season 4 will finally move Gordon closer to becoming the GCPD commissioner is good news.
